Whether through verse, story, or performance, share your reflections on how people and the planet adapt and thrive. Bring your passion, your perspective, and your creativity to a space where art meets activism.
POET ELIGIBILITY
This is a judged Poetry Slam presented in partnership with Alabama State University. All poets are welcome to apply. The poetry slam will choose winners from each of the three categories: ASU student, ASU faculty or staff, and community member. There is no entry fee.
Cash prizes for 1st ($150), 2nd ($100), and 3rd ($75) for each category.
Rules:
Poets should arrive at least 15 mins before 4:00 pm for check-in.
- Each solo poem must be of the poet’s own creation.
- Poets should recite their poems from memory for maximum points.
- Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem. If the poet exceeds the allotted time, points will be deducted from the total score by the scorekeeper. The poem/performance will lose .5 (point 5) off of their score for every 10 seconds they go over.
- The poet may NOT use props, costumes, pre-recorded/taped music, or musical instruments while performing. It’s just you and the mic on stage. However, you may sing, beatbox, or make other body sounds during your performance.
- The poem may NOT include sexist, racist, homophobic, or transphobic comments.
- The poet receives scores out of 10 from the three judges, for a total possible score of 30.
- *Poets will be grouped into three categories: students, faculty/staff, and community members (*in the event of a low number of participants in a category, we may combine categories.)
- There will be three rounds of performances per category.
- In the event of a tie, the top two poets face off in a final round.
- A winner will be selected for each category. (*see #7 above)
