Rooted & Rising • Poetry Slam

Join us for Rooted & Rising: Resilience of People & the Planet, a dynamic poetry slam celebrating the power of words to inspire change. This event invites poets, spoken-word artists, and creative voices to explore themes of sustainability, environmental stewardship, environmental justice, community resilience, and our collective connection to the Earth. Whether through verse, story, or performance, share your reflections on how people and the planet adapt and thrive. Bring your passion, your perspective, and your creativity to a space where art meets activism.

POET ELIGIBILITY

This is a judged Poetry Slam presented in partnership with Alabama State University. All poets are welcome to apply. The poetry slam will choose winners from each of the three categories: ASU student, ASU faculty or staff, and community member. There is no entry fee.

Cash prizes for 1st ($150), 2nd ($100), and 3rd ($75) for each category.

Rules:

Poets should arrive at least 15 mins before 4:00 pm for check-in.

  1. Each solo poem must be of the poet’s own creation.
  2. Poets should recite their poems from memory for maximum points.
  3. Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem. If the poet exceeds the allotted time, points will be deducted from the total score by the scorekeeper. The poem/performance will lose .5 (point 5) off of their score for every 10 seconds they go over.
  4. The poet may NOT use props, costumes, pre-recorded/taped music, or musical instruments while performing. It’s just you and the mic on stage. However, you may sing, beatbox, or make other body sounds during your performance.
  5. The poem may NOT include sexist, racist, homophobic, or transphobic comments.
  6. The poet receives scores out of 10 from the three judges, for a total possible score of 30.
  7. *Poets will be grouped into three categories: students, faculty/staff, and community members (*in the event of a low number of participants in a category, we may combine categories.)
  8. There will be three rounds of performances per category.
  9. In the event of a tie, the top two poets face off in a final round.
  10. A winner will be selected for each category. (*see #7 above)

Event Schedule: Thursday, February 12th, 4-6 P.M.

Event Address:  Warren-Britt Galleries in the Tullibody Fine Arts Center at Alabama State University, 845 S. Jackson St., Montgomery, AL 36104
